Some pictures from Rhona and Adrian’s second visit to us. (Edit: March 2010, the pictures didn’t survive the transition to flickr, will upload them again at some point.) (Edit: March 2010, this was just a pointer to a gallery of a few pictures that didn’t survive the transition to flickr, will upload them again at some point.) Our good friend Hannah visited us for the first time in the middle of February. I’ll update with some pictures at a later date. (Edit: March 2010, will get around to those pictures soon, promise.) We didn’t intend to do anything for this New Year as we’d made such an effort last year to see the fireworks. However, Nicky was back in Sydney and was up for seeing them along with her friend Maerika1 so we invited them over to our new place in North Sydney. I’d asked around work and came to the conclusion that we could go see them from Cremorne Point and most people had stories to tell of turning up 15 minutes before midnight and still getting a great view. Went for a walk with Stef today. In the Ku-rin-gai Chase National Park where I had went with Nicky a while back. Poor girl, still can’t do real walks yet. Anyway, up stupid early to get there by 8.30am. I picked Stef up on the way and, like last time I had a car and went to this park, was half an hour early. Was cold so we elected to stay in the car for as long as possible before going out to say hello to the organisers who had just turned up. Went to do the Manly Scenic Walk from Spit Bridge to Manly with Nicky again. Roz didn’t want to because of the rain. Nicky intended to do it both ways and I said I’d see how I feel after the first leg. It rained, spitting mainly, but still annoying. We started walking across the Spit Bridge at 9am. At 10am we had reached the lookout at the bottom of Tania Park and sat for 5 minutes discussing apples1 prompting me to sms Roz to make us applie pie out of the horrible little green apples she bought. We walked on, past Arabanoo Lookout and started to descend the steps that Roz damaged her ankle on last year. Nicky was about ten paces ahead of me when she slipped. I hurried down to help her up thinking she wasn’t getting straight back up because of the stupidity of it all but when I helped her up and she almost fell straight back down I knew there was a problem. Did the Hen and Chicken Bay walk today from Abbotsford to Mortlake. A bit longer than the Iron Cove Bay walk but not as pretty. At least 1km was along a busy road and the last 1 or 2kms was in suburbia. Rained a small amount. Was reasonable fun though. All three of us did it. Got the ferry back to Abbotsford afterwards. Five weeks in a row. Today was the Great North Walk Stage 4: Hornsby to Galston Gorge and back. Out the house at 6.30am, just me and Nicky. Got to Hornsby by train at about 8.20am. 14km walk to Galston Gorge and then off the North Walk track to Hornsby Heights and the bus back to the station. Was quite tired but we had Fenkata with Nicky tonight. Couldn’t miss that. Pastizzi had a band playing traditional Maltese folk songs. The band is from Melbourne but they are off on a 3 month tour of Malta soon! Nicky loved it as she recognised most of the songs and she translated for us. One of the songs was about an aunt at a wedding who is very much into giving big hugs and kisses to the bridegroom and dancing on the table with her skirt in the air. I think we all know someone like that. Another was about a hunter who tried to shoot a bear but instead shot the ear off a donkey. I think we all know someone like that. Also met Nicky’s friends Andrew and Freddy for the first time. They provided fun conversation for the night. Freddy is part Maltese and speaks it ‘brokenly’ but has had a lot more practice with Nicky about; he also does shifts at the cafe. Another fun part of the night was that the old guy of the band – aged 74 and just released his debut album – lost his voice as he’d been singing all day so his son stepped in and performed a variety of songs including calypso style. He took every chance he could to incorporate Nicky into the songs and then, in one memorable song, he went through the list of pastizzis along with rhymes, most of which were tenuous. But it all added to the fun. Very knackered at the end of the evening and, after watching half of the Eurovision Song Contest (with commentary from Sir Terry thankfully), went to bed for a deep sleep. Actual viewing of insides of houses in Balmain today. Nothing exciting. Everything is nice and cheaper than where we are and often have decent harbour views and are in a much in demand area of Sydney but they are usually smelly, dirty, small, at the bottom of a big hill or has the master bedroom as a mezzanine over the living room. We’re thinking of giving up on Balmain for now and checking out the north shore, closer to work. |
